For small children, handwriting is similar to an athletic activity for adults. That’s why it is very important to do a proper warm up before sitting down at the table to practice writing letters or numbers.
The warm up serves two purposes. First, it allows the child to expend energy, and this will help them stay focused once seated at the table. Second, it wakes up and strengthens the muscles needed to hold the proper body and hand position needed for good handwriting.
So before working at the table, spend 10-15 minutes at play with your child. We recommend the following games: bean bag toss, crab walk, bear walk, ball toss and wheelbarrow walks. Have some fun before the work begins!
